His Motivation: God Is Good, Part 2

God is good, and good all the time. There is no alternative but to understand that he who is goodness itself, that the God possessing goodness as his very nature, cannot but be and do good all the time.

And all the time doesn’t simply mean that God does good within time. It means that he has always done, and so shown, his goodness before time. God was in no need of his creatures in order to display his goodness, for he has ever done so by delighting in and celebrating himself. In fact, this eternal display of the goodness of God, namely, his delight and celebration of himself, is his motivation in all things in time. He does all for his own glory. And this is good because he is good, the highest good. Doing all things for the supreme good is good indeed..

For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another. Isaiah 48:9-11

For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:36

God is good; and so is his unwavering motivation in all. John Piper, trumpeting his preaching’s singular note, says, “God is the beginning and the end, the alpha and omega. From beginning to end God makes clear that he is passionate for his glory, that his glory is the supreme treasure of the universe”1.

Because God is good, he treasures his own glory before all and in all things. God does all for his own glory.
